The former Avondale Estate on which this property sits, was sold from May 1887. Iron and brass moulder Charles Henry Shelley purchased this 21-perch allotment on the estate in March 1889. Although Thomas Chapple Williams junior, a bricklayer, and his wife Eleanor appear as residents of Gladstone Street from as early as 1903, Eleanor acquired title to this parcel of land only in February 1908. TC William’s parents and other family also resided on the estate. It is probably that Williams built his own brick cottage. TC Williams junior was added to the title in 1913. The couple separated and his wife lived elsewhere from the 1920s. Williams lived in the house until his death in 1941. During the 1930s the house was known as 'Menlough’, presumably after a village of the same name in Galway, Ireland.
