This stately timber house was built in 1883 for Hugh Mackay, a clerk and accountant, and his wife, Mary. The Mackay’s owned a large section of land surrounding the house which was subsequently subdivided in 1901 as the Garnet Hill Estate. The house once had substantial grounds and a frontage to Cavendish Road before post-war subdivisions reduced the size of the property. Named ‘Garnet Hill’, the house is important in demonstrating the early residential development in the Coorparoo area.
