This unusual brick duplex was constructed between 1940 and 1941 for David Steadman, a jeweller, and his wife Esther. Once completed, the Stedman’s resided in one of the flats. Named ‘Hinda’, the flats were designed following the then popular ‘Functionalist’ architectural style. ‘Hinda’ is important in demonstrating Brisbane’s development pattern in the late interwar period, in particular in Coorparoo, and the way in which ideas about acceptable forms of housing were changing.
