In 1881 John Gasteen purchased several acres of land on the hill near the top of what would become Upper Cornwall St from Joseph Baynes. Post Office Directories indicate that Gasteen built this house around 1890. He retained a large area of land around the house (despite later subdivisions) and the property stayed in family ownership until the late 1960s.
