This house was constructed some time around 1886 for James Beavis. It is an uncommon example of a two-storey timber Victorian era house and features a single skin front wall with exposed studding. This building method was popularised in nineteenth century Queensland as a modification of traditional English half timbered construction.

History

This Georgian-style timber residence was built in 1886 by Scotsman James Beavis.  It is one of the oldest surviving residences in the area, and was built not long after the 1884 subdivision Mowbraytown.

It has a traditional layout with bedrooms upstairs and living areas downstairs.  Two of the upstairs bedrooms and the living area downstairs have French door access to the front verandah.  A fireplace with cast iron surround and timber mantelpiece is an internal feature. Although some alterations have occurred, there is still enough original fabric to recommend it as a good example of rare style of nineteenth century domestic architecture in Brisbane.
