Real Park was purchased as a reserve by the South Brisbane City Council from 1915. The land had been sold as part of the Heathfield Estate in the late 1880s, when East Brisbane began experiencing a residential boom, but does not appear to have been settled. The park was named in honour of Patrick Real (1846-1928), a former Supreme Court Justice (1890-1922) and prominent Brisbane resident who owned and occupied ‘Eulalia’ at Norman Park. During World War II the park served as a provisional ambulance battalion site for the US Army. Restored as a park after the war, it has continued to provide a recreation area for local residents.
