Pumping station

Interwar 1919-1939

The pumping station was constructed in 1919 as part of Greater Brisbane’s sewerage scheme which began operation in November 1923. The Norman Creek station provided an outlet pump into the creek as well as a cross-river syphon, connecting southern Brisbane to the northern Brisbane sewerage pipeline. The existing brick building was constructed around 1939 to replace the tin shed which had originally housed the machinery. When the main sewer servicing the inner city collapsed, a new diversion scheme was created in the 1940s, with the new pumping station at Caswell Street largely replacing this older station in the 1950s.
