The cast iron columns on Wickham Street are a remnant of the ACB Drapery, once operated in the buildings running from 282 Wickham St to Alden Street. The site was owned by Henry Roberts, a builder, and sold to Albert Charles Byerley, as the Valley’s was experiencing a boom period as a major commercial hub in the early twentieth century. Byerley set up his flagship ACB store in 1916, expanding through the early 1920s, with buildings designed by Henry Roberts. Byerley’s expansion plans for a ten-storey building on Wickham Street never came to fruition, and the ACB Drapery went into liquidation in the 1930s. Although the land was sold and the building altered out of recognition, the columns remain as a demonstration of the Valley’s commercial dominance in the early twentieth century.
