This single storey Interwar Art Deco block of shops was constructed circa 1936 for Percival Henry Bishop. The shops are an integral part of the Albion shopping precinct which retains examples of the principal phase of commercial development during the 1880s and early 1890s, and the revitalisation that took place during the 1920s and 1930s. Numerous shops have occupied the building since the 1930s including a hairdresser, grocery store, dressmaker, fish shop and pharmacy.

History
This single storey block of shops on the corner of Sandgate and Albion Roads dates from circa 1936, however, a general store also appears to have operated on this site from 1865 until 1935. The 24 perch block was sold in 1865 to Henry Wheeler of Breakfast Creek who erected the first general store at Albion. The opening of this store closely followed the building of the original Albion Hotel on the opposite corner of Albion Road in 1864. The original building continued to be used as a grocery and general merchandise store until it was replaced circa 1935.
By the late 1880s and early 1890s Albion was one of a number of prosperous suburban centres that had arisen in response to the expansion of Brisbane from its former small core. In the 1920s and 1930s Albion experienced another growth period as the surrounding suburbs and those to the north expanded. Urban improvements were proceeding apace and in 1927-28 the Abbotsford Road Bridge at the Albion Fiveways was constructed to accommodate the increased road traffic arising from the suburban expansion to the north. The interwar years also saw the expansion or renovation of many of the commercial buildings in Albion, and the construction of a number of new blocks housing multiple shops.
This trend included 282 Sandgate Road which was purchased by Percival Henry Bishop in 1935. In the same year 2 3/10 perches were excised for road widening purposes, presumably to accommodate the increased traffic flow in the area. A new building was erected on the site around this time, probably in conjunction with the road widening. In 1938 the new tenants included a hairdresser, dressmaker, grocer, fish shop and a Bank of New South Wales branch. Various businesses leased the building post-World War II.
Ownership of the building has changed hands only a few times since 1935. Since 1968, the Albion Day and Night Pharmacy has occupied part of the site and the SGIO Building Society leased part of the ground floor for a number of years from 1979. The building remains a substantially intact example of an interwar retail premises and has functioned continuously as such for more than seventy years.
Description
