This nineteenth century brick cottage is likely to have been built by Thomas Stonebridge, a local brickmaker and an early resident of Kangaroo Point. The cottage provides evidence of the early brick making industry in Kangaroo Point, originally known as the One-Mile Swamp, in the mid to late nineteenth century. A brickyard, which had been set up on Toohey Street as early as 1855, was purchased by Stonebridge in the early 1860s, along with the land on which the cottage was built. The cottage was probably constructed by 1874, when Stonebridge was residing in Toohey Street, and was certainly standing by 1887, when Stonebridge died and the property was offered for sale. Used by owners as a residence and rental property through its life, the cottage is a rare surviving example of this type of dwelling in Brisbane.
