Evidence indicates that this residence was erected as an investment property in c1897, following the transfer of the property to James Hinton. Under the ownership on Hinton, the rental property had a variety of tenants. The first tenant was salesman John Cain. This house was one of the later residences to be erected in the Wharf Street during the last decade of the nineteenth century. The initial design included verandahs that surrounded the southern (Wharf St. frontage) and the eastern sides of the dwelling.
