Mount Crosby State School opened as a provisional school in 1882, with an enrolment of 22 students. Mount Crosby was then a remote and lightly populated rural area, primarily inhabited by farmers and timber fellers. With the commencement of construction work on a pumping station in 1890, the town’s population escalated, and poor conditions and overcrowding in the school encouraged the construction of a new, larger building. The provisional school was redesignated a State school in September 1893 and a new building and teacher’s residence were built by contractors Huxtable and Shaddock. In addition to its educational purpose, the school building provided a local community facility until the Mount Crosby hall was opened in the 1930s. The Mount Crosby State School is of significance to the local community, providing educational facilities to its residents since the late nineteenth century.
