‘Merillon’ flats were built on the site of a house owned by Selina Fuller at 541 Brunswick Street which had been destroyed by fire in 1933. In 1935 the land was transferred to Winifred Christina McAvoy, wife of Daniel Patrick McAvoy and a block of flats was subsequently built on the site. The property was transferred to Harry Philip Payten in 1941. The building, located on the Fortitude Valley fringe, was constructed during the interwar building boom to cater to the growing demand in New Farm for rental accommodation on the Brunswick Street tramline. The two-storey, masonry building has some Art Deco elements, including the name ‘Merillon’ in stylised lettering on a parallel line motif above the central entry as well as a stepped parapet. The building has been extended at the rear with additional units in more recent times.
