The core of this five-room cottage with kitchen, formerly known as ‘Waimea’, was probably built in the 1870s and remained in the Outridge-Barlow family for over 50 years. Arthur Henry Outridge, who purchased the property in 1872, was subsequently listed as a teacher in Brunswick Street. By 1874 he was teaching at Sugar Loaf School near Stanthorpe, then Nundah State School before becoming head teacher at New Farm State School in 1901. In 1879 he transferred the property to Andrew Henry Barlow, bank manager and politician, who had married Eleanor Marian Outridge. This transverse-gable, timber cottage originally had a south-eastern side verandah, removed between 1925 and 1937. The cottage and its location reflect New Farm’s early suburban development near the Brunswick Street and Merthyr Road intersection.
