This row of shops, with flats on the upper level, was built about 1937. In January 1938 a modern and attractive flat was advertised to let in ‘a new brick building with every convenience’ and to apply to Mrs Tedman. The property had been transferred to Ernest William and Mary-Ann Tedman in 1932. Though the complex was apparently known as ‘Tedman’s Building’, it was listed in 1939 as ‘Mansted House’, 81 Merthyr Road, and included a pastrycook, butchery, hairdressers, grocery store, dressmakers and mixed business. There are two footpath entrances to the building’s upper level. One is at 81 Merthyr Road and the other at 888 Brunswick Street. The whole property was transferred to Tedman’s widow in 1963 and then to Platon Holdings in 1965. Features of the interwar building include the pressed metal ceilings under the footpath awning, leadlight windows above doorway entrances, and on the upper level, the stucco and face-brick facade with sets of casement windows under tiled-roof gablets.
