This two-storey corner shop and dwelling was built by 1916 and substantially altered in the interwar period. The building was probably constructed following the transfer of the property to Richard Barry in 1910 who was listed as running a store on the site from circa 1911. The timber building, which has retained its original corner entrance, was clad in fibrous cement during the interwar period. The casement windows and stepped parapet were added during this period. The upper level was converted to flats in the 1950s.The corner store reflects the commercialisation of James Street from the early twentieth century to cater for the surrounding suburban development This area, marked by closely-settled subdivisions with narrow streets, was occupied by working-class families close to where they worked in the factories and shops of Fortitude Valley and later, the wharves, warehouses and factories of Teneriffe.
