History
Situated in Moray Street New Farm, “Watsonia” was constructed in 1936 and is an example of one of the more prestigious architect designed blocks in the area. “Watsonia” originally bore the title “Allambie”. Designed by Architectural firm Chambers and Ford, construction began in March 1936 with the development containing three units.
After the death of owner Ms Brigid Doyle in January 1945, the property was transferred to Arthur William Fadden as a trustee with power of sale. An Accountant by trade, Fadden served briefly as Australia’s Prime Minister between August and October of 1941 and was MHR (Federal) for Darling the Downs between 1936 and 1949. He also held position as Treasurer and deputy Prime Minister between 1949 and 1958, and was known for his ‘rough-and-tumble’ parliamentary style.
Description
This three-storey block of units is of the Inter-war Spanish mission style with an overall symmetrical massing. The hipped roof is tiled with a Spanish mission style parapet to the front. The parapet is of exposed brick and extends vertically down the centre, as a feature to the entry. The exterior walls to the front elevation are rendered in stucco and are of exposed brick to the sidewalls. Round arched windows with twisted columns dominate the ground floor elevation to the street.
