‘Kinvarra’, a substantial timber residence, was built in c1908 following the purchase of the property by Michael O’Connor in June 1907. The house was advertised for let in April and May 1908 and described as a ‘new villa residence’ which included dining and drawing rooms, 4 bedrooms and verandas on three sides. It is possible that this Federation-era house was designed by architect Leslie Gordon Corrie, who was inviting tenders for a wooden residence in Moray Street in August 1907. ‘Kinvarra’ is a rare surviving example of a substantial Federation-era residence built when Moray Street was one of Brisbane’s most prestigious streets, before increasing subdivision in the interwar period created higher population density with the proliferation of multiple-occupancy dwellings and flats.
