In June 1911, the Managing Director for Australia of Waugh & Josephson Pty. Ltd. Ernest Alfred MacPherson and his wife Mabel Lucy MacPherson purchased land overlooking the Brisbane River in what was then East Brisbane. They lived in a house at 9 Waldo Street. Mabel died on 23 January 1930. Ernest eventually remarried. When Enest died on 17 October 1942, he bequeathed his private lookout ‘The Rockery’ to the Brisbane City Council. His will stipulated that his widow Gladys Mary MacPherson retain the house and have unrestricted access to ‘The Rockery’. After Gladys died on 18 January 1958, her trustees negotiated the future of the site with Council. Council took full control of MacPherson’s Outlook on 28 July 1959.
