This timber cottage was built for Patrick and Margaret Carew in the late-nineteenth century. John Antonini had purchased 11 acres of the original farming land from Florence O’Reilly in 1884 and subdivided the majority of it into 16 perch allotments to form one of the first residential estates in the area. The first sale of land in Antonini’s “Red Hill Estate” was in January 1885 and John Carew purchased Lots 15 and 16 in August of the following year. It is likely he built this cottage on the site shortly after and descendants of the Carew family and another local farming family, the Bennetts, retained ownership of the property until 2003. One of the few remaining nineteenth century timber cottages in Nudgee, it is physical evidence of the early residential subdivision of the suburb, which remained primarily farmland in the areas outside the vicinity of the railway station until the 1960s
