The block on which this house stands was originally part of the St Kilda Estate, first offered in the 1860s and with sales continuing at least until the early 1900s. This unusual masonry middle class house with two-storey tower and parapet was built in 1899 or 1900 for Henry Sawyer and his wife Charlotte Isabel Sawyer. Sawyer was Deputy Shipping Master at the time, and rose to Government Shipping Master in 1902. While Annerley was a comparatively slow-developing suburb with many allotments remaining vacant up to the interwar period, the availability of an electrified tram service to Brisbane along Ipswich Road allowed professionals like Sawyer to readily commute between their homes and workplaces, prompting them to consider establishing homes in the area. In Sawyer's case the tram line ran conveniently past the bottom of Young Street and had been newly electrified at the time he built his house.
