The prosperous 1920s stimulated Fortitude Valley's commercial and industrial growth. The main commercial core of the Valley, centred on Brunswick Street, underwent considerable change as modern buildings replaced older ones. 226 Brunswick Street was among those constructed during this time of change. Starting life as general commercial premises, it was designed by Brisbane architectural firm, Hennessy and Hennessy and F.R. Hall, and constructed for the butchering firm, A. Sparkes Ltd. When completed in 1923 it was occupied by a variety of businesses, including a cafe, hairdresser and the Valley Laundry Receiving Office. The building was converted into a twin cinema around 1975.
